The following topics provide “what to teach” and “how to teach it” for both new and experienced teachers. Class structure is separated into pods, or sections, to keep the class moving.  Choose from the following topics to custom design your Group Teacher Training session.  Topics may be combined into 1 session, or separated into several shorter sessions.

  • DTW teaching photo 5Rhythm Lessons, Music Theory – Teaching rhythm is so important, but often overlooked because teachers don’t know how to translate “feeling” the beat into a tangible lesson. We’ll learn music heory and how to recognize the different musical patterns. Most importantly, we’ll learn a “common sense” way to teach student how to find the “1” count of an 8-count. We’ll also go through many progressive activities that will aid in teaching rhythm and get the body moving with the beat of the music.
  • Creating fun & developmentally appropriate choreography for kids ages 3-12 – Patterning and pace are key to a developmentally appropriate routine. We’ll look at ways to create moves that are easy to remember and how to use those moves throughout each age group. We follow a similar structure of ballet were what we teach to 3 year old children doesn’t disappear as they progress, but instead becomes more layered, less repetitive and modified to challenge the growing student. Different teaching styles will also be covered (using counts, sounds & pictures) to enhance your students’ ability to learn.
  • DTS teaching photo 10Dance Games – Turn monotonous technique into fun and games! We’ll learn lots of different ways to spice up your class to build technical skills, practice rhythm, & work on body dynamics.
  • Progressing through the years – We’ll learn what skills to concentrate on for each level and how to build upon previous lessons to grow well-balanced dancers.
  • Music Editing – Using Magix Music Maker software, we will learn how to create family-friendly, age appropriate mixes of popular songs (editing software not included, but can be purchased online at www.magix.com.)
  • Hip Hop Steps Breakdown – Coverage of all 150 dance steps in Hip Hop In a Box and 1-2-3 Dance, including teaching hints, modifications and transitions.
